Vièvre et Lieuvin: in the footsteps of the Maquis Surcouf
During the 2nd World War, the Vièvre and Lieuvin was a centre of resistance where the famous "Maquis Surcouf", the most important clandestine Normandy group, operated from. In Saint-Etienne l'Allier, where the French resistance fighters met in the village grocers, an imposing monument plays homage to their courage. During a most remarkable action they destroyed the observatory, installed by the occupation forces at the top of Mont Roti, the highest point in the Eure department, in order to keep watch over the River Seine. Today walkers can discover this site by taking the hiking trail, which is possible to do either on foot, by bicycle or on horseback
