Romanticism and delicacies!
This is the Normandy as depicted in picture postcards: its fertile rolling pastures, its hedge lined fields, its cows with their brown and white markings grazing under the apple trees. Thatched cottages steeped roofed manors and small roman churches complete this idyllic landscape where it is a pleasure to live. Local produce is world-renown and of very high quality: milk products, beef, poultry, apples, cider. Many towns and villages have given their name to famous cheeses (Camembert, Livarot, Pont-l'Evêque.). Visits and tastings are a must! First on the list is that of Gacé whose imposing castle houses behind its high bricked walls a unique museum dedicated to the Lady with the Camelias, the famed romantic heroine immortalised by Alexandre Dumas the Younger and Verdi. The story recounts the love between a local girl, Alphonsine Plessy, and the Duke of Guiche that inspired the novelist to write the sublime portrait and tragic destiny of Marguerite Gautier.
